As we bustle through the holiday season, we may remember to give thanks to our family and friends, but what about our coworkers and team members? Don’t forget your team! We spend about 1/3 of our daily lives with our coworkers; no doubt there are many situations that warrant genuine appreciation and gratitude.
Sometimes, we don’t convey our true gratitude or appreciation with a mumbled ‘thanks’ as we turn on our heels and rush on to our next pressing task. So how is our appreciation best expressed? Ask the deserving team member to step aside when the two of you have a quiet moment that isn’t rushed. Be direct and specific, thank them for what they have done and let them know you appreciate not only what they did, but that you appreciate them. If you don’t have the opportunity to speak directly with the team member, a hand written note or card can be another heartfelt way to let someone know how sincerely you appreciate them.
And if you want to be sure that your team member truly feels your appreciation, you need to express it to them in a way that is meaningful - to them. While one person might like a public acknowledgment during a meeting and an enthusiastic high five – another might like a thoughtful note that they can reread and savor.
